Quantum Media Completes Complimentary Business Strategy Consulting Project with La Muse Press

The small, independent book publisher La Muse Press was chosen by Quantum Media from among several applicants for a complimentary consulting engagement. Owned by Mary Banks, La Muse Press is based in Baltimore, MD.
Considering the business and social challenges of 2020, Quantum Media had announced that it would offer complimentary business consulting sessions to three select young businesses or startups, with preference given to minority- and/or women-owned and led enterprises. This was the first of the three projects to be completed.
Mary Banks started La Muse Press in 2011 when she self-published her book STREET MAGIC: STORIES AND TALES. It offers a powerful, artful vision of the “gritty reality” of the lives of African-Americans. She went on to assist other authors with publishing their books, and she turned her business into an LLC in 2018.
Quantum Media’s Christine Arrington and Touseef Mirza worked with Ms. Banks to answer her key questions, including: How could her business be more profitable and sustainable? How narrowly should she focus her strategy?
Some of the top takeaways from the consulting project were as follows:
- Refocus her services from general publishing to being specifically a book writing coach and self-publishing consultant
- Use her own book as a way to connect with independent bookstores that sell books like hers, by offering to read excerpts and sign books, while also offering her book coaching services, via Zoom or in-person, to these bookstores’ customers
- Reestablish her positioning more narrowly as follows: MARY BANKS IS A SUCCESSFUL SELF-PUBLISHED WRITER AND BOOK PUBLISHING COACH WHO CELEBRATES DIVERSE VOICES
As a result of working with Quantum Media, Ms. Banks said “I now have repositioned myself as a book writing coach. I also plan to create a book writing membership that includes accountability check-ins and a virtual co-working space for writers.”
