Betty Russell is an independent publishing consultant with extensive experience in staff and consulting positions for a broad range of media companies. She provides strategic planning and problem-solving for magazine publishers with a hands-on approach, building long-term client relationships to achieve exceptional circulation and readership gains.
Clients have included large and small publishing companies: Children's Television Workshop, Tufts Health Newsletter, Reader's Digest, Grand Street, BPI, Lear's, Microsoft Journal, Alley Cat News, the Funny Times, Restore Media, and Rolling Stone.
Betty was also chosen by the Council of Literary Magazine Publishers to consult one on one with non-profit literary magazines awarded marketing grants through the NEA.
Betty's background includes twelve years at Aperture Foundation, Inc. as Vice President and Publisher. In that position, she directed new business and circulation activities, developing marketing opportunities with Aperture's Burden Gallery, book division, and Paul Strand Archive.
Before launching her consulting practice, Betty was Associate Publisher at Ms. Magazine. During her three year tenure, she oversaw all aspects of circulation, after the magazine's highly successful relaunch as an ad-free publication.
Prior to Ms. Magazine, Betty held circulation staff positions at The Atlantic Monthly and Esquire.
